Technical Instructor (Information Systems Technology - Two positions Updated 06/13/2026)

Department: WIT-Computer Repair

Position Summary

Washburn University Institute of Technology seeks applications for a Technical Instructor for the Information Systems Technology program. This is a 10-month, full-time position with benefits. This position is expected to work Monday – Friday, 7:30 am – 4:00 pm. Course delivery is in-person on campus.

Two instructor positions are currently available for the Information Systems Technology program. A Year One Instructor and a Year Two Instructor. The Year One Instructor is responsible for teaching a hands-on introduction to the inner workings of computers, including hardware, operating systems, directory services, cybersecurity, web services, LAN/WAN technologies, and messaging services. The Year Two Instructor is responsible for teaching advanced networking concepts, including network architecture, structure, functions, components, and models, as well as the troubleshooting, maintenance, and scaling of networking devices and WAN technologies.

Each selected candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to pursuing teaching excellence at Washburn University, including a dedication to developing inclusive teaching practices that engage all learners.

Essential Functions

  • Instructor position consists of four essential functions: teaching, service, collegiality, and professional development.
  • Teach both theoretical and practical learning experiences.
  • Select and maintain appropriate materials, audiovisuals, and equipment to enhance student education.
  • Direct, guide, and evaluate student performance in the classroom, clinical, and laboratory setting.
  • Maintain a positive learning culture.
  • Maintain student records about the program (i.e., certification testing and the assessment plan); administer tests.
  • Evaluate student work, provide feedback to students, and assign grades. Share (as appropriate) information with the Student Services and Dean's offices; and use the University's Learning Management System to track grades as required.
  • Participate in the development, organization, implementation, and evaluation of curriculum.
  • Participate in developing standards for student admission, progression, and program completion.
  • Develop course objectives and content and laboratory experiences and implement the course of study in cooperation with other faculty.
  • Evaluate each course taught and performance in teaching.
  • Assist in recruitment, selection, retention, evaluation, and advising of program students.
  • Participate in college-wide staff development days, departmental meetings, and fulfill committee assignments.
  • Serve on campus-wide committees as needed; participate actively in departmental/program advisory board meetings.
  • Foster a positive relationship with industry and community partners.
  • Submit budget and purchase recommendations.
  • Act in a manner that promotes collegial relationships and shows respect toward students, staff, and colleagues.
  • Participate in graduation ceremonies and other campus events as pertains to the college.
  • Actively participate in professional organizations and advisory committees. Attend education seminars, conferences, and workshops.
  • Stay abreast of innovations and developments in the professional field and take advantage of the University's instructional support programs.
  • Adhere to college and University policies and perform additional job-related duties as assigned or as appropriate.

Required Qualifications

  • Technical Certificate in Information Technology or a related field, or equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant industry experience.
  • Minimum of two years’ professional experience directly related to networking, information technology, or closely related fields.
  • Completion of the Cisco net Academy Teacher Training coursework or ability to obtain within six months of hire date.
  • Certified as a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or ability to obtain within one year of hire date OR Certified in CompTIA A+, N+, Sec+ or demonstrated experience.
  • Industry-recognized certification or licenses relevant to the technology industry.
  • The program supports instructors who are transitioning from industry into education. Candidates with strong technical backgrounds and a commitment to teaching and continued professional development are encouraged to apply.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Demonstrated dedication to developing classroom culture that optimizes student learning and engages students from all backgrounds.
  • Technical Certificate in Information Technology, Computer Support Specialist, or comparable area. Official transcripts reflecting earned degree(s).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Teaching experience at the post-secondary level with excellent facilitation and classroom management skills.
  • Associate’s degree or higher in Information Systems Technology or related field.
  • Completion of the Cisco net Academy Teacher Training coursework prior to teaching.
  • Certified as a Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
