Behavioral Health Services North (BHSN) is a leading nonprofit organization providing a full range of mental health and substance use services across northeastern New York. Our mission is to provide caring, comprehensive, and person-centered services to support individuals and families in our communities.

Internship Overview

BHSN is seeking a motivated and compassionate student to join our Therapeutic Foster Care (TFC) program as an Intern. This internship provides hands-on experience working with children, families, and foster parents in a supportive, trauma-informed environment.

Under the supervision of experienced staff, the intern will gain exposure to case management, service coordination, and foster care programming, while building practical skills aligned with their academic program.

This is an unpaid internship and is expected to be completed for academic credit, in alignment with your college or university requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Shadow TFC staff in day-to-day program operations
  • Assist with case documentation and file organization
  • Observe and participate in client and foster family interactions, as appropriate
  • Support coordination of services for children and families
  • Attend team meetings, trainings, and case reviews
  • Complete assigned projects and learning objectives as outlined by academic program
  • Adhere to all BHSN policies, confidentiality requirements, and professional standards

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a Human Development & Family Relations (HDFR), Social Work, Psychology, or related program
  • Internship must be for academic credit (if required by school)
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism
  • Willingness to learn and engage in a behavioral health setting
