The Fitness and Aquatics department is responsible for providing high-quality fitness and aquatics programming for clients across our settlement house programs in our state-of-the-art facilities in our historic headquarters located at 331 East 70th Street which includes our swimming pool, gymnasium and fitness center. Reporting directly to the Director of Fitness and Aquatics, the Lifeguard will be an integral member of the Fitness and Aquatics team and will have responsibility for ensuring the safety of our clients from both an operational as well as a programmatic perspective. We provide high-quality swim instruction, open swim hours and myriad other water aerobics and fitness related classes for clients ages 3 to 103.
Responsibilities
- include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Ensure the safety of all pool patrons, wearing appropriate attire and constantly scanning the pool area for signs of distress
- Lead aquatic skill development, recreational activities, in-water swim instruction as assigned to our various client populations
- While on duty, obey and enforce all the rules and regulations of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, New York State laws and Lenox Hill Neighborhood House
- Provide any care or assistance required by pool patrons in distress (not to exceed the scope of the Lifeguard’s training) in keeping with the standards and guidelines of the certifying agencies (American Red Cross, American Heart Association, YMCA, etc.), and the NYC Department of Health
- Monitor first aid supplies, rescue equipment, communications systems and pool chemistry, in compliance with DOH regulations
- Display a courteous and professional demeanor when interacting with members, guests and staff while maintaining focus on pool surveillance
- Report all incidents, accidents and complaints—as well as any unsafe or unsanitary conditions—to the Aquatics Coordinator or Director immediately, both verbally and in writing
- General maintenance and cleaning of fitness and aquatics areas as needed, including, but not limited to, hosing the deck, sweeping the pool, removing any objects, keeping the deck clear and vacuuming
- Inspect all pool safety equipment and first aid supplies at the start of each shift to ensure that everything is correctly located and maintained
- Prepare the pool for programming as necessary—including assisting instructors with class equipment, record keeping and sign-in sheets
- Participate in all Fitness & Aquatics Staff In-Service training, including rescue drills, emergency rehearsals, and general staff meetings
- Complete all other responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Director of Fitness & Aquatics
Qualifications
- The ideal candidate for the part-time Lifeguard thrives in a highly social and busy community setting and is committed to working with the community and supporting the health and safety of our clients.
- American Red Cross certificates (or equivalent certification) in Lifeguarding (deep water), CPR for the Professional Rescuer, Responding to Emergencies and First Aid as well as at least one year of professional lifeguarding experience required.
- American Red Cross certificate (or equivalent certification) in Water Safety Instruction and/or training leading water aerobics ideal.
- The Lifeguard (Part-Time) will work 13.5 hours per week as scheduled by the Director of Fitness & Aquatic.
- Spanish or Chinese fluency is ideal.
