Position Summary
The Youth Program Intern will participate in a structured learning experience supporting the after-school youth program at La Mesita Apartments. Under supervision, the intern will support age-appropriate, trauma-informed youth programming designed to encourage academic engagement, social development, and positive relationship-building. This internship is educational in nature, aligns with academic goals, and does not replace the work of paid employees. Learning Objectives: Understand trauma-informed care within youth and community programming Develop skills in youth engagement, mentorship, and behavior support Gain exposure to planning and supporting structured youth activities Strengthen communication, teamwork, and professionalism in a youth services setting Learn ethical standards, boundaries, confidentiality, and mandated reporting requirements Receive supervision and feedback to support academic and professional growth Intern Responsibilities: Interns may engage in the following supervised learning activities: Assist with after-school programming and structured youth activities Observe and support staff in fostering positive relationships with youth and utilizing respectful behavior redirection techniques Assist staff with games, crafts, educational activities, and structured life skills programming Support supervised homework assistance, mentoring activities, and recreational programming Assist with program setup, cleanup, and organization of supplies and materials Participate in community events, youth outings, and special activities as approved Observe and learn trauma-informed approaches to youth engagement and support Shadow staff during youth programming and team collaboration Support communication with residents and visitors under staff supervision Participate in team meetings, reflective supervision, and trainings Complete required trainings, including confidentiality, safety, and trauma-informed care Maintain professionalism and confidentiality in all aspects of the role Eligibility & Requirements Depending on program placement, additional clearances or qualifications may be required. Currently enrolled in a college or university academic program in a field related to the internship position, and seeking academic credit for the internship. Possession of a valid Class One Fingerprint Clearance Card (must be obtained prior to internship start). Able to pass a DES or DCS Central Registry background check (must be completed prior to internship start). Time commitment of 10–20 hours per week, depending on program and academic requirements. Ability to maintain reliable attendance and follow supervisor instructions Must demonstrate strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills Adhere to all organizational policies, including the Code of Conduct, professional standards, and applicable regulations. Comply with mandated reporting requirements under Arizona statute A.R.S. § 13-3620 by reporting any suspected abuse or neglect of a minor to the appropriate authorities. Working Conditions/Physical Requirements: Work is primarily conducted on-site within the youth program and community spaces Ability to engage in active youth programming, including standing, walking, and participating in recreational activities Ability to sit for extended periods while assisting with homework help or administrative tasks Occasional lifting of up to 25 lbs. for program supplies or activity materials may be required Exposure to standard office and program equipment such as computers, phones, printers, and recreational materials Ability to participate in a dynamic youth-focused learning environment Must maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions Additional Clearances (Depending on Program Placement): Drug Screening Valid Unrestricted Driver’s License Motor Vehicle Driving Record Current Auto Liability Insurance Food Handler Certification CPR/First Aid Certification Training and Orientation: (Depending on program placement) NIO (New Intern Orientation) Program Orientation Therapeutic Options Training CPR/First Aid Training On-the-job Training & Job Shadowing We appreciate your interest in our organization.
