Job Purpose/Description

Subject Tutor for the Saints Learning Commons will tutor individual and/or groups of students seeking support and/or enhancement in understanding specific subjects/courses. We are especially looking for physics, computer science, nursing, psychology, statistics, hiim/med terms, accounting, finance, and economics.

  • Job Duties
  • Tutor students (individual and small groups) in-person and online (through Zoom) by appointment.
  • Establish personal contact and rapport with students while being identified as an academic resource and role model.
  • Implement a student needs inquiry and follow up on the results as needed.
  • Create a welcoming academic environment for students.
  • Maintain an accurate, up-to-date Google Calendar.
  • Keep regular and accurate records of sessions and timesheets.
  • Maintain current knowledge of content offered in your subject area.
  • Conduct “class visits” and assist with promoting tutoring services.
  • Promote awareness of individual responsibilities for academic success, including but not limited to assisting students of all academic abilities with various academic concerns and refer to appropriate campus resources.
  • Attend sessions, training sessions, team meetings, meetings with staff, programming events, and any specific events as requested by your supervisor. These take priority over all other non-academic commitments.
  • Follow detailed procedures and requirements as assigned by your supervisor.
  • Bring students of concern to your supervisor’s attention and, when appropriate, work with the staff to resolve concerns.
  • Maintain regular communication with your supervisor and team leader.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Understand and abide by College and program policies and procedures as a role model.
  • Required Qualifications
  • Must be a current CSS student
  • Federal work study eligibility is required
  • Minimum: Sophomore status by the upcoming Fall semester
  • Completion of the particular course in which tutoring is to be done with an “A” or a strong “B” and faculty approval.
  • Ability to abide by the Student Code of Conduct
  • Proven record of responsible decisions, punctuality, self-motivation, and organizational skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills working with diverse groups of students
  • Competence in working with Google Docs, Gmail, Excel, Microsoft Word, and other software applications.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior tutoring experience
  • Able to work a flexible schedule, including evenings.
  • Above a 3.5 cumulative GPA.
  • Ability to tutor in a variety of subject areas/courses.

Tutor appointments are for one full academic year, excluding summer sessions, unless the student is graduating mid-year.
