Position Summary

The ELL Teacher designs and delivers language acquisition support for students whose first language is not English, using evidence-based strategies to advance academic language proficiency and content access.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate with an ESL/ELL or Bilingual endorsement (NZ, NE, or equivalent) as defined by the Michigan State Board of Education
  • Candidates who do not yet hold a Michigan teaching certificate may qualify through enrollment in GEE's Career Advancement Program (CAP), which provides a supported pathway to Michigan certification. CAP eligibility is determined at the time of application.

  • Core responsibilities
  • Assess student language proficiency using WIDA screener and ACCESS assessments; maintain accurate progress records for all ELL students
  • Provide direct instruction, co-teaching, and push-in/pull-out language support aligned with WIDA standards
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to differentiate content-area instruction for English learners
  • Identify and properly enroll students with Limited English Proficiency; maintain ELL program records per MDE requirements
  • Serve as a liaison between families, school staff, and community resources
  • Participate in Child Study Team meetings and professional development

Physical requirements

Must be able to perform the physical demands of the role, including lifting, bending, stooping, squatting, and standing for extended periods. Work environment includes elevated noise levels.
