  • DESCRIPTION The Float Nurse (10-Month) works in a collaborative relationship with the health services coordinator/supervisor, school nurse/cluster nurse, health assistants, and school administration under the direction of the health services coordinator/supervisor.
  • The Float Nurse (10-Month) practices school nursing in accordance with the State of Maryland Nurse Practice Act and professional standards of nursing practice.

Education

  • A diploma from an accredited school of nursing OR An Associate of Arts degree in Nursing from an accredited school.
  • Certification/Licensure: An active license to practice registered nursing in the State of Maryland. Current CPR and First Aid certification issued by the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS The ideal candidate for this role will also possess a combination of the additional qualifications below. Two (2) years pediatric or community health experience. Experience working with Special Education students. Basic understanding of the physiological and psychological aspects of normal and abnormal development. Ability to independently perform nursing treatments specifically related to students with complex medical needs. Ability to relate to children, parents, medical and educational personnel Good leadership ability. Computer skills and experience. ESSENTIAL POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES The below list is a summary of the functions of the job, not an exhaustive or comprehensive list of all possible job responsibilities, tasks, and duties. Substitutes for health staff in schools for absences and vacancies. Uses the nursing process to assess student health needs and develop appropriate plans of care and school agreements. Performs nursing assessments and tasks to address student health care needs during bus transportation and reports concerns to parents, health services and school staff. Maintains accurate and appropriate records. Maintains health care equipment in good working order, and reports equipment problems to parents and/or health services professionals. Administers medications and treatments to students as ordered by physicians. Delegates nursing functions to school health assistants and other unlicensed personnel in compliance with COMAR 10.27.11 and provides training to school personnel as needed. Provides basic first aid to students and staff and makes referrals for additional care when indicated. Facilitates the adjustment of students with health-related needs to the school setting. Serves as case manager, liaison, consultant, advocate, and resource person with students, parents, school staff, related service personnel, and the community. Orders appropriate supplies. Maintains confidential information in compliance with nursing practice, state and federal regulations, and school board policy. Makes home visits when indicated. Maintains the health suite. Participates in screening committees, parent conferences, IEP and 504 meetings as needed. Maintains and improves professional skills. Maintains current licensure in nursing and related certification as required. Job performance may include performance of physical activities such as walking, standing, lifting, and/or transfer up to 40 pounds. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Employee Safety The employee is responsible for the use of safety devices and protective equipment in order to minimize the frequency and severity of work-related accidents. The employee is responsible for using safe practices and methods in the operation and supplies related to their job. Working Hours The duty day for this position is 7 hours and a half hours including a thirty-minute duty-free lunch. EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION Compensation This is a 10-month per year position in the Howard County Education Association, Educational Support Professionals (HCEA-ESP) employee unit. The current salary range for this position is Grade A on the School Based, Float Pool salary scale, $36.35 - $60.94 per hour. Step placement will be in accordance with the salary procedures of the Howard County Public School System and the HCEA-ESP Master Agreement which considers relevant prior experience. Under the Fair Labor Standards Act, this position is exempt from overtime. Retirement Membership in the Maryland State Retirement Agency (MSRA) pension plan is a mandatory condition of employment for all employees who meet the eligibility and membership criteria defined in the State Personnel and Pensions Article and the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR). A qualifying employee cannot reject membership, nor can an ineligible employee elect membership. The annual contribution to the pension plan will be 7% of an employee’s annual salary.
