Job description
Monmouth University is seeking applications for on-call Lifeguards in the Fitness Center located in the Boylan Gymnasium on our main campus.
This is an in-Person on campus, non-Remote position

A pool lifeguard ensures swimmer safety by actively monitoring designated aquatic areas, enforcing rules, and responding instantly to emergencies. Key responsibilities include rescuing swimmers, administering CPR/first aid, maintaining water safety standards, and conducting facility checks. They must be certified, attentive, and able to work in high-stress, high-humidity environments.
- In this position you are expected to communicate and enforce all Monmouth University regulations and pool rules in a personable and professional manner.
- Be dressed in a uniform of a bathing suit and a Red Monmouth Issued Lifeguard t-shirt.
- Maintain the safety of the patrons in and around the pool.
- Communicate any potentially dangerous elements of the facility to the Aquatic Director.
- Perform patron surveillance with a rescue tube from the guard stand.
- Remain alert and use all senses while guarding.
- Test the water, record results and record imbalances to the supervisor.
- Be able to respond to an emergency and contact/activate EMS.
- Handle all incidents in a manner appropriate to your training.
- Complete all injury reports in black or blue ink.
- Conduct deep-end tests and buddy checks during camps.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities • Surveillance
- Actively scan the water, pool deck, and locker rooms to prevent accidents, injuries, and drownings.

- Aid: Perform water rescues, provide emergency care, and administer CPR, AED, and first aid when necessary.
- Rule
- Enforcement: Communicate, enforce, and explain pool policies, safety rules, and regulations to patrons.
- Facility
- Maintenance: Inspect pool areas for hazards, test water quality (pH/chlorine), and maintain cleanliness on deck. Complete opening and closing check lists.

- Plan (EAP): Initiate the facility EAP when necessary, including securing the area and aiding in emergency procedures.
- Communication: Actively supervise swimmers, interact with the public, and coordinate with staff members to ensure a safe environment.

Work often takes place in high-temperature, high-humidity environments.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current certification in Red Cross Lifeguard Training, Red Cross Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for the Professional Rescuer, Community First Aid and Safety or
- equivalent.
- Ability to pass in-water skill tests, including swimming proficiency, diving, and lifting, as outlined on the Monster.com Lifeguard Job Description page [https://hiring.monster.com/resources/job-descriptions/protective-services/lifeguard/].
- Ability to stay focused and alert for long periods.
- Quick thinking and sound judgment during stressful, high-intensity situations.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.
