Avenue Kids Camp is seeking enthusiastic, caring, and responsible Camp Counselors to join our team this summer! As a Camp Counselor, you'll be the heart of your campers' experience — guiding, encouraging, and cheering them on from the first activity of the day to the last across our four-week camp season.
Position overview
This is a full-time, four-week seasonal position running for the duration of the camp session. Each Camp Counselor is assigned to one age group for the full camp day. You'll be your group's primary point of contact — accompanying them through daily activities, building meaningful relationships, and creating a safe, fun, and welcoming environment where every camper can thrive.
- Key responsibilities
- Supervise and support your assigned age group throughout the entire camp day for the full four-week session
- Escort campers between activities, meals, and transitions with care and enthusiasm
- Foster a positive group dynamic built on kindness, inclusion, and respect
- Serve as a trusted, consistent presence for campers — addressing concerns, resolving conflicts, and celebrating wins
- Actively participate alongside campers in daily programming and special events
- Communicate regularly and professionally with camp leadership and specialist counselors
- Monitor camper health, safety, and well-being at all times
- Maintain accurate attendance and be aware of any camper medical or behavioral needs
- Help set up, clean up, and maintain activity spaces as needed
Qualifications
- Required
- A genuine love for working with children and a positive, patient attitude
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to stay calm, flexible, and solutions-focused in a fast-paced environment
- Availability for the full four-week camp session
- Reliability, punctuality, and a strong sense of responsibility
- Preferred
- Prior experience working with children in a camp, school, or youth program setting
- Background in education, child development, recreation, or a related field
- First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain prior to start date)

- Physical Requirements
- Ability to actively supervise and engage children of a single age group throughout the camp day
- Must be able to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, and sit on the floor for extended periods
- Ability to lead and participate in indoor and outdoor activities, including games, crafts, worship, group discussions, and recreational events
- Ability to lift, carry, and move camp materials, supplies, and equipment weighing up to 25–30 pounds
- Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to children’s needs and emergency situations
- Sufficient vision, hearing, mobility, and communication skills to ensure effective supervision and child safety
- Ability to maintain attention, patience, energy, and a positive attitude while working with children in a fast‑paced environment
- Work Environment
- Work is performed on the Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church campus, including classrooms, activity rooms, gymnasium, fellowship spaces, outdoor recreational areas, and off-campus field trips
- Environment is active, energetic, and child‑focused, with frequent movement and interaction
- Moderate to high noise levels due to children’s activities, music, and group programming
- Exposure to varying weather conditions during outdoor activities
- Work schedule may include early mornings, extended daytime hours, and occasional special events
