Job description

Overview

The Carey School, a Preschool through 5th grade independent school in San Mateo, California, seeks an Extended Care Leader for the 2026-2027 school year. This part-time position involves supervising students in Preschool through 5th grade during after-school hours. The Extended Care Leader is accountable to the Auxiliary Programs Director.

Responsibilities

The Extended Care Leader assumes all responsibilities assigned by the Auxiliary Programs Director. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Planning and supervising indoor and outdoor activities for Preschool-5th grade participants.
  • Providing a safe, caring, and enriching environment for all students in their care.
  • Communicating thoughtfully and effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.
  • Following and implementing school safety and disciplinary measures and procedures.
  • Preparing and leading outdoor group games and hands-on art and STEM projects.
  • Providing homework assistance and academic support.
  • Maintaining sign-in/out records and following all related procedures.
  • Maintaining organization and cleanliness of after-school spaces and materials.
  • Collaborating with colleagues to plan and implement programming.
  • Demonstrating professionalism at all times by upholding the school's values and supporting its leadership.
  • Operating in a friendly, flexible, and cooperative manner with all members of The Carey School community.

Qualifications

Experience working with elementary age children is required. Early Childhood Education/Child Development units are strongly preferred. Enthusiasm for games, outdoor play, and education. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Effective multitasker and self-starter.

Additional Information

Position Type: Part Time, Non-Exempt, School Year Hours: Flexible start between 2–3pm, ending at 6pm; some evening hours as needed Pay Range: $20-25 hourly, non-exempt position
